Film digitizers work
much like normal scanners used to digitize your photographs or
documents. They are, however, specialized systems designed to
reliably handle diagnostic films and produce very high quality DICOM
images.
For application in teleradiology or PACS
archival, the right digitizer can produce years of trouble-free
operation with the image quality you need to clearly see what must
be seen.
In considering which system to employ, we
consider the following critical features:
- Insist on digitizers that fully comply
with the international DICOM standard. Systems that use
proprietary image formats severely limit options for the user.
- Auto feed systems allow the operator to
load many films and scan them automatically. This is often a much
more effective solution than requiring the operator to manually
feed films.
- Auto calibration is a basic design
consideration for most scanners, although it is possible to
purchase scanners that do not have this feature. Systems that
require regular calibration are often not properly maintained and
can produce poor image quality.
- Film feed systems should feed from top
to bottom, allowing gravity to assist in the feeding process.
